Second Life isn’t a Life.

By Winnie Wong Sing Yih (49427)

Second Life is an interactive virtual world reachable through internet where people spend a great deal of time and money. Participants in these increasingly realistic life and engage in activities ranging from simple conversations, financial transactions, to stimulate sex, violence, and rape, or even marriage and divorce (Furber, 2009).

Apparently, it is a video game. I mean, you wouldn’t say it is your career, or hobby even you are earning or spending so much money and times on it. This virtual system remains virtual eventually. The most interesting part is about the behavior of people who are on Second Life, no matter consciously or not consciously willing to try and get into it for some reason. That’s the beauty of today worlds, only the choice you could not expect instead of no choice.

One of the highlight about Second Life is free role play. In terms of both choice and charge. Avatars may take any form users choose such as human, animal, vegetable, mineral, or even a combination of them. Of course, residents may choose to resemble themselves as they are in real life if they want to. I believe that some images and characteristics of avatars will be the projection of user’s desire. For instant, a fat girl wanted to get a fit body in few minutes, she goes for second life. If a man wants to be a girl in few minutes, he does not have to buy a dress but goes for Second Life. The instant projection can’t actually satisfy the urge but might trigger more questions about real life identity. In real life, identity like father, husband, leader, and daughter is an obligation, in Second Life, brand new identity is your creation without duty but interest or even curiosity which means, and it could be obscene in certain condition.

Moreover, many users try to entertain themselves by getting a “second life” under real life pressure and problems. Actually, it is pretty sarcastic when a person could not manage their real life issue but having a great second life in virtual. As our lives are full with unpredictable and uncontrollable condition, Second Life would be too manual to compare with. Users can build their own castle; buy their own fancy car with a finger click which is never possible in real world without any hard work. In fact, we cannot just selectively skip or ignore the steps of succeed because it is a bad practice of humanity. Well, if users try to compare Second Life with real life, it is definitely not a solution of but an excuse.

Here is the real deal, would you like to trade off or give up everything for this virtual life? There are so many things that genuinely beautiful and meaningful in our lives. Our life which cannot be pause and reply is what Second life could not present with. A successful and charming avatar character cannot define who you are to your beloved family, friends and significant others. It cannot make a difference, contribution and development for your community, country and world. So, when you spend your creativity and intelligence to build up this virtual avatar, ask yourself just one more time: Is this Second Life worth to risk it all?

  1. Hi Winnie, the concept of second life is really intriguing. At first glance, it gives you a temporary "high" feeling that you can be anything you want to be. If it is just for the sake of pure entertainment, I do not think it will become a big issue. But when emotional attachment and a large amount of time investment is put in, it can become "real " to the person involved.

Being addicted to the concept of the second life actually has a deeper meaning to it. It simply means you are unhappy in your current state of life and you try to fill in the emptiness by resorting to living "another exciting life" But I think with every choices you make whether online of offline, consequences will follow.

To me, prevention is better than cure. I will not try to play with fire when it comes to reality or virtual reality. The last thing I want to happen is when my real life crash and burn.

  2. Dear Winnie, thank you for your sharing about the Second Life. Addiction on Second Life is a real problem. Users can fulfills their whims and fancy that cannot supported by the real world on the platform which provided by Second Life. It is interrupting user’s life when users scarify their sleeping time, live in a sedentary life style and fail to focus on academic or workplace tasks.

We do only live once. Second Life is just a channel for people to get relax and having fun on it. If people really enjoy the Second Life, they have to achieve the balance. However, if users are people who easily get addictive to things, then the key is to take control as soon as possible.

  3. Hi Winnie,
Thank you for this sharing topic about "Second Life". actually, i'm never knew this kind of video game. based on the explanation it's desribe free role play means that anything can edit to be "imaginations" like the real life. But it's only virtual avatar to whom feel that not satisfy in their life. its depends on ourself how to create meaningful how this life should be and not to be.

    1. Yes Romie, if you ever watch the movie Avatar, you would found that how different is the purpose and effect between them. The movie reflected value, the game ignored.

  4. Thank you winnie. I really doubt the existence of the second life. We would not appreciate what we have and we will not be satisfied no matter how good and blessed we are in real life. Hence, in the second life, it can even fulfill the lust of people. Therefore, I am totally against with second life for a very simple reason, it is not real at all! Although love relationships may occur from there, but still it is very risky because we can fake our gender, age, religion and etc. in second life.

    1. Yes Esther, imagine when you realised that your Mr Right is a fake identity online, it is real nasty and hurt. Second life is just way to risky to be trusted.

  5. Thanks Winnie. Real life comes from our relationships with others. The development of our social lives is essential for our psychological and emotional well being. Even though online gaming are social in nature, but I see it as being "social lite," because it limits the richness of human interactions, or "social safe" because it keeps relationships at a comfortable distance.

Fundamentally, technology creates a mediated and low-resolution approximation of life that does offer utilitarian benefits and some entertainment value. But is it "real" enough to want to substitute much of real life? I don't think so. I'll take high-resolution and unmediated life any time.

    1. haha~true Patrick. Second life cannot make you a prince charming in real life but make you more vulnerable and ridiculous to compare with your created perfect identity online. We should all be real when it comes to improve ourselves in real life but not fake one online.

  7. Hai winnie.

  8. Hi Winnie, I agree with you that second life isn't a life because it is actually just a life that derived from your own world, in other world, it is you and just you that appear in a virtual world. In this case, then why we should choose to live in virtual world instead of the real life? Anything that can do in virtual world is the same as in real life and it is way more meaningful then clicking your keyboard and mouse.

  10. Hi, Winnie~
I do agree that second life is not a life. It is just a game but I think the gamer put more passion in game than in real life. However, the high technology and the specialty of the game really capture their heart to try the game since it is character game that the gamer can take themselves to have a new life. Game aimed to make people to relax but it brings side effects, especially when people are addicted to it.

  11. Well said Jessie, we should all put our passion and effort in real life instead of something just not more than imagination.
