Review about a YouTube Channel

to a YouTube Channel

by Loi Wei Zheng (47448)

The Advantage of YouTube for me

I consider myself as a video maniac. I spend a lot of time watching videos on YouTube, thus subscribing to numerous channels. Subscriptions are an important part of my YouTube experience. If there are specific channels that I like, subscribe to them. Once I did, any videos that channel publishes will show up in my Subscriptions feed. This makes it simple to keep up with the content I care about.

Here's a story, I got into comic books nearly 16 years ago. However, the price of a comic book isn't cheap and buying one is even difficult since not every book store in Malaysia sells American comic books. So how do I read comic book then? Technically, I don't.

At the early years, my source of knowledge about comic books are through fan pages and Wikipedia. Thanks to those websites, I'm able to read the synopsis and summary of any comic I was interested to get into.

8 years ago, the comic book culture rose to prominence due to the popularity of superheroes genre movies. Many (like me) refer to the original sources - comic book to understand deeper about their favorite on screen heroes. However, catching up to a comic book character is a tough row to hoe. Many comic book characters' origins go back decades. For instance, Superman was created in 1933 by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shustergoes.
His origin had actually underwent several alteration and changes throughout the decades. So for the new Superman fans, which comic book do they refer to? What year of publication they should read? More importantly, how do they even begin?

Thanks to YouTube, all of these dilemmas came to an end. Many comic book fans who have experience of reading and collecting comic books - the experts around the world have came together to form alliances and dedicate themselves by presenting their knowledge about comic books through vlogging on YouTube. As of today, there are nearly 200 comic book YouTube channels.

The Channel that I Subscribed

As for me, I subscribed to ComicsExplained , a channel that was designed to assist in answering questions about Marvel Comics and Dc Comics in an easy to understand way. The channel is created by Rob on the Jul 8, 2013. Currently, it has over 984,795 subscribers.

Overall, Here's what I think about:

PROS
In terms of the content, the host often upload videos that provide details explanation about comic characters (what do they symbolize, when, how and why they were created); the alterations that the characters have gone through; as well as the significant impact on the publication due to those changes. Thus, viewers do not just learn about the comic characters, but they are able to understand how the physical world (the author's perception and socio-political issues) shapes the characteristics of the characters themselves. In a way, viewers can somehow relate the frictional characters with real world issues.
In terms of the medium, the videos uploaded by the host are mostly 20-30 mins long, in the form of narrative and visual content were included. They are easy to understand and interesting to watch.

CONS
However, many of the content speak from a single person point of view. For instance, what the host think about a character; cancellation of a publication; criticism on a comic book adaptation movie/tv-series all through his personal opinion and interpretation through years of reading. Hence, there's a matter of objectivity in terms of the host's choice of knowledge share to the viewers.

2. The IMPLICATIONS towards the communication on:
CURRENT SOCIETY
There was a time when comic book conventions were a niche event for avid nerds to geek out over the latest adventures facing their favorite superheroes. Today, San Diego Comic-Con is a cultural Mecca attended by over a hundred thousand fans and followed by millions across the globe looking for sneak peaks. Similarly, fan across the globe express excitement and provide review on a recently watched superhero movie via vlogging in YouTube. In a way, this phenomena helps redefine comic book culture in the digital age.

FUTURE SOCIETY
According to Lucas (2013), online comics and digitally distributed comics have already changed the way people read comics. Not only has the internet changed the industry itself, but it has also affected how the audience commentary is packaged. YouTube vlogging is the new talking over bins in the back of the comic book store. Conventions heavily rely on a digital presence to boost sales and drive influencers to want to participate in the Comic Cons, giving readers an opportunity to discuss their opinions openly, and for the first time, anonymously.

In other word, YouTube comic book channel has taken over a large part of the backyard community surrounding comic books. Though the industry and culture adjust to that as they have been all along; but it has also given rise to digital comics, which are easier to store (on a hard drive rather than in boxes) and to take on the go.

The internet has taken what used to be the simple act of going to the comic book store after school with a few of your friends and magnified it into a global conversation. Superheroes aren’t a new concept, but the exchanges stemming from a culture still trying to digest story-lines of characters that have been around for over 60 years are. In a way the internet’s consumption of comic books and their characters has become the pumping heart of a dying, generational experience.

Blog review about blogs

Joycelyn Ong Shee Hui (47120)

I have chosen two blogs that I like. The first blog that I have chosen is Jane Austen World, link : https://janeaustensworld.wordpress.com/ I chose the first blog because it features one of my all -time favourite author, Jane Austen. I have read all her books, in which Pride and Prejudice is my favourite.  The blog is comprehensive in terms of its contents.

I especially like the fact that the author tries to introduce as many historical background about Jane Austen and her novels to her readers. As shown in the blog, the author is a well -read person and obviously passionate about what she is blogging. She carefully and creatively chooses her words and images while relaying narratives and her own personal experiences. She establishes herself as a Jane Austen fan that wants to continue the author’s legacy in the online world.

One of the most prominent features of the blog is the design and layout of the blog that gives out a vintage and elegant vibe which accurately reflects the Regency Period (The timeline and setting of Jane Austen’s time). Not only that, it is easy to read the blog and readers can choose from several tags and options such as podcasts and teacher and student resources. Furthermore, it is a great source for literature study purpose for new readers of Jane Austen as well as for her hard core fans like me.

For the second blog, I accidentally discovered about The Gallivant, link http://www.thegallivant.net/  while I was researching for my FYP topic, parasocial relationship. The author posted a blog post on that topic and I clicked into the link. It is totally different from the first blog in which it centres on real life experiences of a 20 –something (considered young) wife of a Navy as she travels with her husband. This blog promises you a feel good factor as you read through the vivid description of the travels of the author as well as the sharing of her perspectives about lifestyle and any other things.

I think the author is a nature and travelling addict (in a positive way). She takes good pictures and is willing to share her experiences with her readers. She is also candid in her writings, I enjoyed her post about parasocial relationships, in which she described her favourite television characters as her best friends. Not only that, I see her as a resourceful and creative person as she uses her passion and talent in writing to also do some freelance jobs through this blog. In the blog, she shares links of her social media account and welcome the readers to contact her for any job opportunities.

One of the most prominent features of this blog is how beautiful everything is arranged. From the blog posts to the images, tags, options, buttons, everything just fits in so well. It really attracts me how balanced the blog is structured to sharing personal stories as well as to promote the author as a freelance author and editor, which I think is very cool because that is my dream job !

I have chosen one blog that I dislike, Crappy Taxidermy, link: http://crappytaxidermy.com/ . The content of the blog just turns me off because it displays animals in a not so proper, or perhaps not ethical way. Though taxidermy originally aims for academic purpose, but the content of blog is more of sarcasm and for pleasure alone.  I find it ridiculous because the blog is already 7 years old, and it means that there is a huge following and reader base. Maybe it is just me, but I cannot see the significance or meaning of displaying animals in such a manner. You can even request for a certain animal to be displayed by writing to the admin or author of the blog.

I think the author is either too passionate in Biology or animals or he or she is just on the weird spectrum. To be fair, the admin is also dedicated to update the blog posts regularly but I am sorry to say, the blog is not really my cup of tea.

The most prominent feature of the blog would be the content of the blog itself, with its visual shocking images. Somehow we are living in an era where bizarre stuffs are made viral to a point it becomes part of “news”.

In conclusion, there are many blogs out there that awaits our exploration. It really depends on one’s personal preference and interest. But to me, a good blog must possess good write ups and beautiful images. It must be engaging and relatable to leave a deep impression in the heart of the readers.

Is the Internet changing social life?

By Chong Jia Chi (46521)

There is no question that Internet already plays a huge influence in all aspect of our life. With the easy access to the Internet such as the invention of the smartphone, it is making the communication among people  more rapid and transmitted virtually immediately throughout the globe. In other words, it enable an always ‘online’ communication between people, 24/7 without end.
However, does this revolution really change the nature of interpersonal communication? Indeed, the basic nature of people’s relationships with others may have changed but in another point of view, Internet may be a new way for people to do old things too. Internet may become a new and useful tool associated with electronic communication and led to a pattern changes in life, yet, the social patterns of social life have remained very much the same despite of those Internet-induced changes (Tyler, 2002). It seems more likely an innovative way to manage long-standing social problems and needs than a transformation technology that changed the patterns of interpersonal communication (Tyler, 2002).
As many researchers stated that digital communication leads to weaker social ties because people have less reason to leave their home and conduct a face-to-face interaction with others. It allows everything become easily work with no matter to form and maintain friendship, online banking, doing discussion and many more. Nonetheless, there is a group of researchers who directly pointed out that the psychological quality of Internet social interaction is lower than face-to-face interaction (Tyler, 2002). The relationships that develop through Internet are actually close, meaningful and long lasting, with those develop relationships in Internet, people bring into the real world and show how self-concept and social identity play a crucial role in this process.
Moreover, a study that was done by Gross, Juvonen and Gable toward adolescent is they are actually use Internet like telephone instead of using it as an opportunity to try different personality and identity. The study found out that Internet communication is very similar to “traditional means of youth social interaction” (Tyler, 2002). In fact, the use of the Internet does not shape any psychological happiness in any way that is different from other modalities in terms of the influence of social interaction
Thus, Internet provides people with a platform that allows people to engage in activities that they already had way to participate in but it offer them with some added efficiency and opportunities to improve their interaction in order to meet their needs. There is nothing significantly different about the Internet that transforms basic psychological or social life.
Although Internet might change the nature of work and social relationships but if we look in another perspectives, it seems the more things change, the more they stay the same.

The Dangers of Social Media

By Lim Sok Fern (47395)

When we first open our eyes in the morning, I believe that most of us will look for our digital devices and check what time is it and surf the Internet to seek for latest news and updates.  We have all been there. We are so used to glance on phone screens that it becomes a habit now.

Due to the convenience of social media, we are expected to be connected 7 days per week and 24 hours per day. For instances, a group leader is predicted to answer his or her group mates’ inquiries although it is midnight time and a worker is expected to fulfill his or her boss’s order to complete certain tasks even he or she is on their off day. All these expectations are followed by stress, exhausted and unhealthy lifestyle as people never get to enjoy their time in their life.

Booher (2014) pointed that if people spend an hour on social media per day, the amount of network time would be accumulated and equals to nine weeks a year! In other words, the social media is wasting our time, reducing the productivity and affecting our performance. Instead of sticking with our social media accounts, we shall think what can we do, create, build, or learn with that time.

Moreover, it is just the Internet. Do you really know all the hundreds of Facebook friends on the Internet? The creation of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter gives a view about people are connected with other others despite the geographical distances. However, it also causes people ignore their real friends, family, and life. The social media addicts spend more time in the online world while neglecting their surroundings. Do you still remember when the last time you greet your neighbor is?

People often stick with their social media accounts to avoid boredom (Reinke, 2015). In fact, we feel bored and unhappy because of our social media accounts. The posts on social media lead the users constantly to compare themselves with others and consider less of their lives (Probst, 2015). People’ life is continuously being hit by other social media users’ thoughts. Hence, it causes a low level of life satisfaction and leads to unhappiness.

In addition, social media is the first and last things we check every day. The brightness of our phone screens could trigger alertness and affect our mental health (Laliberte, n.d.). According to Loria and Gould (2015), the phones light will disrupt people’ sleep schedule, damage our memory and vision.

In conclusion, the social media has been widely used for boon and bane in the digital era. It provides a platform for global communication and plays a vital role in e-commerce in the 21st century. However, scholars pointed that the social media has affected the social relationships, individual well-being and available time for sleep (Zaitie-Bank & Tat, 2014). Ultimately, it is not about the daily usage of social media, but we have to be aware of what social media might be doing to us.

The Virtual Community

By Lim Sok Fern (47395)

The advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has transformed the form of community in the society. Today, people are free to generate different form of community without social identity restraints and geographical constraints (Chang, 2011). The emergency of the Internet has become a digital platform for people to create, initiate, develop and sustain their personal relationships. Coined by Rheingold, the term of “virtual community” is recognized as “social aggregations of people that bringing public discussion with enough human feelings and form online personal relationships in the cybrspace (Chan, Bhandar, Oh, & Chan, 2004).

People in the virtual community are based on similar goals, interests or values instead of a shared location. In the virtual community, members are allowed to interact without constraint of time and location. In addition, the virtual community members don’t reveal their real identity and obligate to contribute in the online world (Chang, 2014).

How virtual communities achieve success in the 21st century? Scholars pointed that anonymity, trust and a sense of community drive a virtual community to flourish (Chan et al., 2004). In the cyberspace, online users rely on each other based on perceived trust and strong sense of self. For instance, the openness followed by anonymity on the Internet causes people to reveal more about their personal information to others. When their opinions and ideas have been accepted by the other online members, they feel that they have strong attachment with their online friends thus form a sense of belongingness.

However, Chang (2011) stated that the virtual community is unable to sustain for a long period of time due to lacking of strong ties. It seems difficult for people to transform their online relationships to traditional relationships because of absence of individual commitment. Petroczi, Nepusz and Bazso (2007) stated that people desire to face-to-face meeting and it recognized as the basis to build commitments in order to generate a strong sense of belonging.

Moreover, the text based communication increase the chance for misunderstandings when emotions on the Internet did not represent the exact pictures. It takes time for people to understand the intended message and provide feedback. So, people see that the virtual community doesn’t make human life easier.

Hence, does the existence of the virtual community bring us benefits or damages? As mentioned in the beginning, it brings people closer within each other. At the same time, it provides platforms for crime cases such as cyber bully and scam. As we all are part of the virtual community, what is your opinion toward this issue and how do you differentiate yourself between the virtual community and the real world community?

IDENTITI LGBT MEMPUNYAI DUA PERSPEKTIF
