Review about a YouTube Channel

to a YouTube Channel

by Loi Wei Zheng (47448)

The Advantage of YouTube for me

I consider myself as a video maniac. I spend a lot of time watching videos on YouTube, thus subscribing to numerous channels. Subscriptions are an important part of my YouTube experience. If there are specific channels that I like, subscribe to them. Once I did, any videos that channel publishes will show up in my Subscriptions feed. This makes it simple to keep up with the content I care about.

Here's a story, I got into comic books nearly 16 years ago. However, the price of a comic book isn't cheap and buying one is even difficult since not every book store in Malaysia sells American comic books. So how do I read comic book then? Technically, I don't.

At the early years, my source of knowledge about comic books are through fan pages and Wikipedia. Thanks to those websites, I'm able to read the synopsis and summary of any comic I was interested to get into.

8 years ago, the comic book culture rose to prominence due to the popularity of superheroes genre movies. Many (like me) refer to the original sources - comic book to understand deeper about their favorite on screen heroes. However, catching up to a comic book character is a tough row to hoe. Many comic book characters' origins go back decades. For instance, Superman was created in 1933 by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shustergoes.
His origin had actually underwent several alteration and changes throughout the decades. So for the new Superman fans, which comic book do they refer to? What year of publication they should read? More importantly, how do they even begin?

Thanks to YouTube, all of these dilemmas came to an end. Many comic book fans who have experience of reading and collecting comic books - the experts around the world have came together to form alliances and dedicate themselves by presenting their knowledge about comic books through vlogging on YouTube. As of today, there are nearly 200 comic book YouTube channels.

The Channel that I Subscribed

As for me, I subscribed to ComicsExplained , a channel that was designed to assist in answering questions about Marvel Comics and Dc Comics in an easy to understand way. The channel is created by Rob on the Jul 8, 2013. Currently, it has over 984,795 subscribers.

Overall, Here's what I think about:

PROS
In terms of the content, the host often upload videos that provide details explanation about comic characters (what do they symbolize, when, how and why they were created); the alterations that the characters have gone through; as well as the significant impact on the publication due to those changes. Thus, viewers do not just learn about the comic characters, but they are able to understand how the physical world (the author's perception and socio-political issues) shapes the characteristics of the characters themselves. In a way, viewers can somehow relate the frictional characters with real world issues.
In terms of the medium, the videos uploaded by the host are mostly 20-30 mins long, in the form of narrative and visual content were included. They are easy to understand and interesting to watch.

CONS
However, many of the content speak from a single person point of view. For instance, what the host think about a character; cancellation of a publication; criticism on a comic book adaptation movie/tv-series all through his personal opinion and interpretation through years of reading. Hence, there's a matter of objectivity in terms of the host's choice of knowledge share to the viewers.

2. The IMPLICATIONS towards the communication on:
CURRENT SOCIETY
There was a time when comic book conventions were a niche event for avid nerds to geek out over the latest adventures facing their favorite superheroes. Today, San Diego Comic-Con is a cultural Mecca attended by over a hundred thousand fans and followed by millions across the globe looking for sneak peaks. Similarly, fan across the globe express excitement and provide review on a recently watched superhero movie via vlogging in YouTube. In a way, this phenomena helps redefine comic book culture in the digital age.

FUTURE SOCIETY
According to Lucas (2013), online comics and digitally distributed comics have already changed the way people read comics. Not only has the internet changed the industry itself, but it has also affected how the audience commentary is packaged. YouTube vlogging is the new talking over bins in the back of the comic book store. Conventions heavily rely on a digital presence to boost sales and drive influencers to want to participate in the Comic Cons, giving readers an opportunity to discuss their opinions openly, and for the first time, anonymously.

In other word, YouTube comic book channel has taken over a large part of the backyard community surrounding comic books. Though the industry and culture adjust to that as they have been all along; but it has also given rise to digital comics, which are easier to store (on a hard drive rather than in boxes) and to take on the go.

The internet has taken what used to be the simple act of going to the comic book store after school with a few of your friends and magnified it into a global conversation. Superheroes aren’t a new concept, but the exchanges stemming from a culture still trying to digest story-lines of characters that have been around for over 60 years are. In a way the internet’s consumption of comic books and their characters has become the pumping heart of a dying, generational experience.

  1. Thanks Patrick for your sharing. Although i don't have such experience but i have a similar experience in watching animation. If i am interested in a manga, i will choose to watch its animation instead of reading it because manga is more longer than i expected and i don't have many sufficient time to read all. Hence, animation become my alternative and mostly one episode will take only 30 minutes.

In addition, animation is more appealing than only picture and word in manga because of voice, actions as well as music so my emotions can wrapped along the story and it is way more interesting.

    1. You're welcome. Indeed, videos on YouTube most certainly make things much easier. But we cant deny the fact that this changes the behavior of comic consumers. In turn, affect the industry. For better or for worse...

  2. Hi Patrick, thanks for sharing about your experience about subscribing a Youtube channel. I myself subscribe to many Youtube channels in various genres and I can relate to you when you talked about the pros and cons of it. One more thing I would like to add is sometimes I do develop a kind of connection with the vloggers that I watched haha. Maybe because that's my FYP topic : parasocial relationship , which is a one sided connection with media personalities.

Indeed, Youtube needs to be explored even further because there countless videos being upload even at this moment. Whether it is good or bad, it is up to our discernment and preference. =)

    1. You're welcome, Joyce. Me too develop a liking to certain vloggers that I watched. And I do question myself sometimes, will I be biased for only listen and agreed on the vloggers' point of views. I do trust their interpretation, but nevertheless I try to watch other vloggers to get a different perspective.

  3. Thank you Patrick for your sharing. I personally do not subscribe any YouTube channel before. I have the fear to subscribe to any channels in YouTube and I don't know what's the reason. However, I watch many YouTube videos especially MV,dramas and movies. YouTube is my first choice whenever I am searching for these kinds of entertainment. In addition, when I especially fall in love with new release songs, I will look at the comment and see whether there are people commented on something where I wish to say. To me, YouTube is interesting for me to explore but I still can say that I am not getting addicted to it yet.

    1. You're welcome Esther. I did the same thing- reading YouTube comment. I'm too curious to find out other viewers feedback. But I admit sometimes those comment affect my emotions. For instance, someone commented on how much the vlogger should improve in certain area. I would felt that to be unnecessary. The commenter was just demanding for perfection. Perhaps, I'm being biased?

  4. Hi Patrick, thank you for sharing about this interesting topic. With the technological advancement, ordinary people are given opportunities to access unlimited types of information and knowledge. In addition, those lively videos on YouTube channels have no obstacles of time and distances. As long as people have data or WIFI services, people can upload or watch any YouTube video at anytime and anywhere. In my opinion, the YouTube experience can be either good or bad, it is depending on user's control and the situation in question.

  5. Hai Patrick.

    1. Hi Amirah. Surfing Youtube is indeed a fun experience. At the same time, it's addictive. Sometimes I spend a whole night watching youtube without even realizing it. I guess ultimately, we need to tell ourselves where the limit should be.

  6. Loi! I'm not fanatic as you. Hahahahaa. I just watch video when people ask me to do so, because I'm not very good in "exploring" a new things in internet. Sangat merugikan. Saya hanya menonton YouTube untuk tengok cerita kartun, itu pun sebab adik bongsu yang suruh download kan. And yeah, i would like to tell you that, saya baru sahaja tahu macam mana nak download cerita dari YouTube beberapa bulan yang lepas. Yes, YouTube sangat best, tapi saya jarang gunakannya. Mungkin sebab nak jimat DATA dan mungkin juga sebab saya bukan IT PERSON yang suka 'meng-explore' apa yang ada dalam YouTube.. Noraini is such a -RUGI- person.. hehehe .. thank you for your sharing!

    1. Hello Noraini, memanglah Budak Cemerlang Comm amat berdisiplin. But there's no harm to explore something new in the Internet, especially through YouTube since the content is in videos format, which are in the most digestable forms. Since the information is limitless, it's only a matter of looking for the right information.

  7. Hi Patrick!

Since its about review for Youtube channel, i'm also wanna to share about my POV about the channel i'm follow (yeah). Before that, i'm not really "addicted/fanatic" with this kind of technological advancement, as we know its will consider and relevant with our time, data usage and etc. So, directly spoken about the channel i'm follow on the YouTube channel such as it's more like instrumental music, inspirational movies and songs, and so on. With the wifi as my "channel of data", its really help me to see any things like i mentioned above. Glad to know that you are really comic fans, really cool actually. with your reason behind this kind of things it's make really interesting ways how you survive and find the initiative to get what you really want. Keep it. The most important things that i wanna to share, as the "good mind" "good users" and "good thinker", we supposingly take this advancement nowadays as the "tools" no matter how we want to do in context of "Internet" and so on. Make it valuable and balancing it with our time management and etc. Enjoy it and make fun for relaxing your mind. Maybe it can helps us to find the ideas, create new ideas and think outside of box...(creative person). That's all and have a nice day with YouTube channel. (cool).
